Viking Cruises recently made a very exciting announcement about their newest chapter: Viking Expeditions. Setting sail in 2022, Viking will employ two custom-built Polar Class 6 ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, across a slate of voyages to Antarctica, the Arctic, the Great Lakes & Canada, and other “Grand Journey” itineraries.
Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris host just 378 guests and are optimally sized and built for expeditions. Straight bows, longer hulls, and two types of state-of-the-art stabilizers will allow the ships to glide over the waves for the calmest possible journey. Industry firsts include: The Hangar with its in-ship marina and slipway; The Aula, the first panoramic al fresco auditorium at sea; and our Nordic Balcony, a sunroom that converts to an al fresco viewing platform to provide optimal wildlife viewing.
As part of the Viking commitment to "the thinking person’s cruise," they have partnered with some of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions, including the University of Cambridge’s Scott Polar Research Institute, The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and NOAA. These organizations will provide Viking Resident Scientists for each expedition who will conduct research on board and provide guest interaction and enrichment.
As part of this expansion into the expedition market, Viking has launched four new Great Lakes itineraries that offer guests the opportunity to visit the Earth’s largest body of fresh water, a vast wilderness closer to home: Undiscovered Great Lakes; Great Lakes Explorer; Niagara & The Great Lakes; and Canadian Discovery. A new voyage traversing the globe from the Arctic to Antarctic, From the Arctic to Antarctica, is also available for booking, as are the Grand Journeys that traverse the globe.
